shirley manson
i remember first hearing the song "vow" in 1995 and completely loving it...then i learned that the great line "i can't use what i can't abuse, and i can't stop when it comes to you" was ad-libbed by shirley.
how kick-ass i thought.
thus began my love for one very original and amazing band.
and for one of the coolest chicks ever, who rocks black eyeliner like no ones damn business.
seeing them open for the smashing pumpkins was the cat's pajamas. that show was so fun that paul and i saw them at the palladium two nights in a row on their next tour. looking back, i now realize that those shows at the palladium were in 1998. which means that was 10 years ago. i am old.
shirley is allegedly working on a new album and allegedly collaborates with beck and jack white, although in this interview she doesn't really answer too many questions about it.
so i guess i just wait.
Fun fact:
Garbage's drummer Butch Vig is also a super-producer having worked with Nirvana, Sonic Youth, and the Smashing Pumpkins.

The Ting Tings part 2
Remember last month when I was all "ooooh my new favorite band The Ting Tings blah blah blaaaaaaaaaaaaaah."?
now they're in the new ipod ad.
i totally called it.
this song is too much fun and is for sure going in the roller skating mix on my ipod.
p.s. i don't really think that i "totally called it"
that was me being facetious.

L.A. Live will be weird
the Ritz Carlton extravaganza that they are building downtown further shocks me with details like:
When construction of the 54-story Convention Center headquarters hotel is completed in 2010, the 224 Ritz-Carlton Residences at L.A. Live, which will occupy the upper 27 floors of the building, will undoubtedly offer tenants a memorable view.
54 stories! damn right the views will be memorable.
prices starting at $1.4 million and stretching all the way to $9 million for each of the 12 penthouses...
$9 million! are you shitting me?
and of course:
Ritz residents will get preferred access to rooms (and rates) at Ritz hotels in other cities. Additionally, they will have the opportunity, before the general public, to purchase tickets to events at Staples Center and the Nokia Theatre, as well as all other venues operated by AEG, including the Home Depot Center in Carson.
Yay! More people to screw me over if I ever want tickets!

if you like hip hop...
...you should be reading The Notorious B.L.O.G.
my friend Kevin knows more about hip hop shit than everyone you've ever met so it's a reliable source if you need one.
also, this article about the year 1994 in hip hop is great...although i happen to love 1993 since it gave us the 36 Chambers and Midnight Marauders...on the same day no less.

commercials can be awesome
i know this is SO 2006 but i was just thinking about it.
remember the Coke "What Goes Around" commercial?
Jake White did the music. Nagi Noda directed.
Michel Gondry maybe felt a little copied. I enjoyed.

Brooks just told me about this site.
You Tell Concerts is basically a stonery dude going up to other drunk stonery people as they exit a concert and ask them what they thought of about the show.

Soulwax
i just read on Shots Ring Out that the Soulwax dudes have made a documentary about their touring.
all of the music in the trailer makes me want to spew chunks, but Soulwax CDs have long been close to my heart.
i first spotted the 2 Many DJs stuff at Amoeba back in '02 and they soon became highly treasured entertainment.
correct me if i'm wrong but these dudes kind of paved the way for mash-up CDs right?
(right Girl Talk?)

more from the Apatow gang
this may be overkill to some but i am OK with it.
Apatow, Stoller, Hill & Brand Reunite for Greek
Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nick Stoller is reteaming with Judd Apatow for the comedy Get Him to the Greek, with Jonah Hill and Russell Brand attached to star, reports Variety.
Stoller has been tapped to write and direct the film, which centers on a fresh-out-of-college insurance adjuster (Hill) who is hired to accompany an out-of-control rock star (Brand) from London to a gig at L.A.'s Greek Theater. (i've totally been there!)
Hill and Brand played supporting roles in Universal's "Sarah Marshall"; Stoller made his feature directing debut on the pic. Stoller is co-writing and will direct the comedy Five-Year Engagement for Universal, with Jason Segel co-writing and attached to star. He and Segel are also collaborating on a new Muppet movie for Disney.

Kids' book explains mommy's plastic surgery
Divorce. Bullies. Foster care. There are books for children on just about every tough subject these days. But mommy's plastic surgery?
A Florida plastic surgeon has written about just that in My Beautiful Mommy, a picture book due out April 28 that tries to calm the fears of kids with parents getting tummy tucks, breast enhancement procedures and nose jobs.
click here to read the article from USA Today (!)

Philip Glass
i had no idea about the existence of this documentary. it's called Glass, A Portrait of Philip in 12 Parts.
Philip Glass is a thrice Oscar nominated composer.
his score for The Truman Show is complete perfection, in my opinion.
in the trailer, documentary filmaker Godfrey Reggio says this: "He has created a musical language that is the acoustic door to the unknown"
Wow. Am I cheesy for being in LOVE with that quote?
Fun Fact: Philip Glass is first cousins once removed with Ira Glass.

tropic thunder
every time i see something about this movie i get more and more excited.
and then while thinking about Comic Con i realized that Tropic Thunder comes out after this year's dork fest. Does that mean there'll be a panel? A panel with Ben Stiller and Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr.? OMG. That would rule. A lot.
the spirit
this teaser was revealed at NY Comic Con over the weekend and i think it looks pretty cool.
some might say "hey, that's a Sin City rip-off" but hey, it's frank miller, he can make all his shit look the same if he wants to.
i just really like the cast in this movie.
hopefully they have a panel at comic con and gabriel macht is there. skeet!
The Spirit isn't out til January '09 FYI

He is very close on the heels of my number 1 fave Paul F. Tompkins.
Every week he's been making me near-piss my pants at Comedy Death Ray.
He is very close on the heels of my number 1 fave Paul F. Tompkins.
Every week he's been making me near-piss my pants at Comedy Death Ray.
It's been super dreamy because he invents new characters to do so it's not like i am hearing the same joke over and over, like when Sarah Silverman talks.
He'll be doing Comedy Death Ray until the end of April, but you don't have to be a huge
comedy nerd like me to be able to enjoy Andy's characters.
In his blog he talks about how he is recording all of the performances for his AST CD.
WooHoo!
My laugh will totally be in the background though, so that sucks.
Fun fact:
In addition to thinking Andy is completely adorable I may or may not daydream about us having picnics together and me caressing his dimples.

the awareness test
i saw this a bit ago and have had 2 random conversations about it today, so here's this.
main titles
film and tv main title sequences excite me for many reasons.
one of those reasons is that I have worked in the "mograph" industry and i know that it takes a village. honestly, it can take 10 people and a zillion hours to create something that is less than 3 minutes long. it's very fascinating to watch in progress, which i did a lot because i answered phones at 2 different companies and saw renders aplenty.
Art of the Title is a nice little site with some super good-looking film main titles.
you should watch some.
a few of my personal faves:
American Splendor
Panic Room
Lemony Snicket
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Because the interview is conducted by Amy mothaflippin' Poehler.
Sadly that above link doesn't give you the whole interview so you have to be a lady and go buy the magazine.
While you're at it, get the Entertainment Weekly this week too. Tina looks ridiculously cute on the cover, like she's a classy dame from the 40s.
Or just click and read the article here.
(thanks MAB for telling me about the Marie Claire interview. i guess i need to renew my subscription.)

if i were a gambling lady, i'd bet that might be awesome.
Mary Anne, are we going tostalk go to her movies?
if i were a gambling lady, i'd bet that might be awesome.
Mary Anne, are we going to
Street Kings!
I saw the best horrible movie yesterday. It was a dumb story, filled with clichés, aerial shots of City Hall and even a cop funeral. How many times have we already seen this?
A sample of some dialogue:
Keanu:
"This thing you want that you think you want, you don't want"
Chris Evans:
"You don't know what I want."
"Bad breeds bad"
"Blood doesn't wash away blood"
“You went toe-to-toe with evil and you won”
There were so many more good ones, but I didn't have a notepad with me.
James Ellroy, what is wrong with you? Did you seriously write this triteness?
I laughed out loud at least 8 times.
Are these people trying to make the "Showgirls" of retro-1990s cop movies?
BUT.For some fantastically mind-screwing reason, I was entertained the whole way through.
It was fun to count stereotypes, enjoy LA from a bird's eye view, and guess what sweet one-liner the movie was going to end on.
Also worth noting:
This movie is painfully miscast. I don't think one actor fits with their role, except maybe Common, who has about 5 minutes of screentime.
Jay Mohr was like one of his bad jokes, complete with a terrible Hitler/porn-stache.
Forest Whitaker does some first rate overacting, almost like he's on a soap opera.
What kind of backwards time are we living in where Keanu acts better than Forest Whitaker?
I'm scared. Hold me.
Keanu though. My God he is attractive.
The End.

Homestar Runner & Strong Bad
I've been enjoying the Homestar Runner site since 2001.
Lately I haven't paid to much attention to it, but every time I go back it never disappoints. Especially the character Strong Bad, his emails, and the resulting Teen Girl Squad cartoons.
The site is a flash animated world that was created by 2 dudes that refuse to sell ad space and grew by word of mouth.
If you have no idea wtf I'm talking about click the link above and let the magic of Wiki explain it all. Or just go to http://homestarrunner.com/
Netflix has HSR DVDs to rent too.
First, get acquainted with the characters and then I recommend clicking on "toons" and then watching the aforementioned Strong Bad emails and Teen Girl Squad cartoons. If you don't laugh I'll give you one hundred dollars.
Meanwhile~
I thought of HSR because I just read this article about how Strong Bad is getting his own video game series on Wii.
pretty cool.

i know i know, at least it's not dying.
but still. it's just weird. i am not a fan of change.
i will miss you honey chicken. i will miss you crappy old bathroom with the weird hand towel thingy. i will miss you candlelit room that is so dark i can't see my food. i will miss you tiny little stage that has welcomed everyone from Fiona Apple (heavenly) to Paul F. Tompkins to Colin Hay.
So it's moving over to La Cienega to take over the Coronet Theater. and there will be a PARKING LOT! Hooray!
Flanagan wrote about it in the NEWS section of the web-site. I had no clue until during Tig & Friends comedy show last night Chris Hardwick was all "Mike, this might be the last time we are on this stage."
Also~ they've made a Largo movie that will be at the LA Film Festival in June.

kristen wiig is also extremely funny
my love for this woman grows every time i see her. not like that, you guys. she's just so gosh darn talented.
i don't know what it is, but even in SNL skits like this...that go on too long or aren't the best idea in the world....she just totally OWNS it and makes it work for me. her old lady/ weird lady/ creepy lady characters entertain me to no end.
i can't help but talk like them sometimes. now i'm saying "oooohhmmmmmygaaaaaaawddd" and getting overly excited about things. just watch it.

Blindness
the 1st teaser for Fernando Meirelles' Blindness is here!
the official web-site has a link.
i am so fascinated with this movie. maybe i am going to buy the book and read it.
2 of my favorite people are in it, julianne moore and mark ruffalo.
The Constant Gardener director Fernando Meirelles joins forces with Canadian writer/director/actor Don McKellar to bring Portuguese Nobel Prize winner Jose Saramago's 1995 novel concerning an epidemic of blindness that pushes society to the breaking point after sweeping through a modern metropolis to the big screen in this large scale philosophical thriller.
Sounds good right?

edgar wright signs a deal
Working Title has signed a two picture deal with British filmmaker and legend Edgar Wright ("Shaun of the Dead," "Hot Fuzz").Wright has agreed to write and direct two projects for the London based production company, the first project being "Baby Driver," a wild spin on the action and crime genre which will be set in the US.That will be followed by "The World's End" which will complete a trilogy of comedy films co-written with Simon Pegg in which they unite again to pen valentines to some of their favorite genres. Both films will be produced by Working Title in association with Big Talk Productions with Big Talk's Nira Park producing with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.
That pleases me in many ways. Not just because I am in love with him. I am also in love with his films.
Read his MySpace blogs, you will soon be in love with him too.
