500 Days of Summer

The Playlist has info about this movie that a good pal was involved with. I love it already because this cast can't be beat and the script is pretty fantastic.

(i like the middle poster best)

kevin smith talks kevin smith (and seth rogen)

i like this article in EW where Mr. Smith takes us on a picture tour of his career.

i especially like his extremely nice words about my Fiancée Seth:

''I know I'm supposed to blow Seth about how great it is to work with him; that's the standard. But it's also as true as death and taxes. The guy's a genius. He makes good things better. For his tender age, he's more insightful about comedy and storytelling than most lifers I've met. Movies are in his blood. Mercifully, Clerks had been a big influence on him. Midway through Zack and Miri, I'd felt like I'd made Clerks just so Rogen could see it and wanna work with me one day. For a guy I'd never met till recently, we just understood one another perfectly. Then you add a leading lady who stands shoulder to shoulder with him and earns half the title by being just as strong a character as the guy, and you're off and running.''

Cute, right?

I have also been enjoying my Fiancée on the talk shows this week talking about his new Green Hornet diet.
On Kimmel he likened watching Jimmy eat a bag of chips to watching porn.
He even made Leno watchable:

David Sedaris, how I love thee...

Jeff Wells led me to this piece that David Sedaris wrote for The New Yorker a few days ago titled "Undecided".

It's pretty magical.
Especially this:

I don’t know that it was always this way, but, for as long as I can remember, just as we move into the final weeks of the Presidential campaign the focus shifts to the undecided voters. “Who are they?” the news anchors ask. “And how might they determine the outcome of this election?”

Then you’ll see this man or woman— someone, I always think, who looks very happy to be on TV. “Well, Charlie,” they say, “I’ve gone back and forth on the issues and whatnot, but I just can’t seem to make up my mind!” Some insist that there’s very little difference between candidate A and candidate B. Others claim that they’re with A on defense and health care but are leaning toward B when it comes to the economy.

I look at these people and can’t quite believe that they exist. Are they professional actors? I wonder. Or are they simply laymen who want a lot of attention?

To put them in perspective, I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. “Can I interest you in the chicken?” she asks. “Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?”

To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked.

watch 30 Rock tonight

or watch it online. i already did.

poehler won't be replaced

probably because she is irreplaceable...

Lorne confirmed it yesterday...

Seth Meyers, who co-anchors the show's centerpiece feature - "Weekend Update" - will be anchoring alone, at least for a while, "SNL" creator/executive producer Lorne Michaels told The Post yesterday.
"He's going to be doing ['Update'] solo for the foreseeable future," Michaels said.

another vote video

i know i'm late on this. it's so "yesterday", but i laughed. yep. in 2008 fucking Borat is still making me laugh. and i'm not ashamed.

what's Michel Gondry up to?

filming a music video? a commercial?

he won't tell.

will someone go to this with me?

Location: Punta Caracol, Bocas del Toro island, Rep. De Panamá.

Dream Date:

WWPFTD?: Paul F. Tompkins Gives You Much Needed Life Advice

Gentle Readers:
I’m sure you see me on the TV screen and think, “I wish I could talk to that guy. I want to ask him questions and have him tell me how to live my life.” Well, somebody here forced me to make your beautiful dream come true! Send your questions here to me and I’ll give you the best advice I feel like giving!

Just part of my contract,

Dear Paul F. Tompkins,

My son, who is nine, has never been into sports or guns or typical “boy stuff.” I know it makes my husband a little uncomfortable, but he tries to be as supportive as he can. The other day, my son came to me and said that for Halloween this year, he’s decided to dress as a lady! I’m predicting my husband will freak out, so I’m asking, WWPFTD?

Kelly T.

Dear Kells:
I like that your son said “a lady” instead of “some broad”. He sounds like a class act, like Michael Feinstein. I can only assume your husband is afraid that your son might be gay. I only say this because your son is obviously gay. So then I’d remind your husband that it’s 2008 and being gay is not a strike against his son, who is his own flesh and blood. Also, if a nine year old boy is dressing like a lady for Hallowe’en, he sounds like a badass. He clearly doesn’t care if other kids might give him a hard time; he’s got his priorities straight. Priority #1: be outrageous. Tell your husband to relax. This kid’s gonna be fine.

If nothing else at least you get to listen to Thriller. Who doesn't like that?

David's Situation

Here is a short bit of the pilot David and I shot for HBO a few months ago. HBO was AWESOME to let us shoot it, and we are the ones who nixed going forward with the show...however-
-We all had such a good time that David and I are working on a new show that will let us kick ass. I put this video up because I think it kicks ass. I know you are missing story here...basically Zach Galifianakis plays an annoying old friend of David's who chances upon his house just when the house is being used to tape an episode of "Good Morning, Predator". Zach's character, LAME, has a shitty song he loves to sing to everyone and he does so here, completely oblivious to the fact that he is being labeled a predator. He's so happy to be on TV, that that is all that matters. It's a funny song, and cool video. Enjoy. (OH, and once again, HBO didn't nix the show, WE don't get mad at them. They are on our side and we're hoping to work with them in the future - hopefully the near future).

these are a few of my favorite things today:

* the ellen degeneres show. seriously. watch this video and you'll see. (basically dennis quaid was a guest last week and ellen had him wear an earpiece and he went into the starbucks on the warners lot and she fed him lines to yell out.) i'm about to watch kristin chenoweth do the same bit in the warners gym.

*speaking of starbucks. i went today. i'm not a psycho coffee person. i have a gift card and i was walking by it and i wanted an iced tea. and then i saw the pinkberry symboly icon thingie on the menu and my eyes went SCHWING. pinkberry and starbucks made a deal and now i am drinking my pinkberry out of a straw. hell yes.

* i saw the movie slumdog millionaire. yeah, i liked it. but my favorite part was before the movie started and this nice looking older dude sitting next to me goes "can i ask you a really gay question?" and i smiled and said "of course" and he goes "where did you get that skirt?"
and i said "anthropologie" and he told me how cute it was and then we had a conversation about why doesn't anthro have a dudes department. i just love how he busted out with "gay question" and the sincerity of a compliment from a stranger. that was maybe the best part of my day.

From Outblush:
Banana Bunker
Get your mind out of the gutter, girl! ( Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight )
This little gadget stays out of the bedroom and is rated E for "Everyone needs one." The flexible, plastic Banana Bunker ($10 for 2) is designed to prevent fragile bananas from bruising and blackening in transit. So simple, we don't know why they didn't think of it sooner.

happy b-day IMDB

Today is the 18th Birthday of the Internet Movie Database.

Some of you might be wondering how it is possible for IMDb to be 18 years old when the first web browser wasn’t available until 1991. For that we go to IMDb founder and managing director Col Needham to explain:

On this day in 1990 I published a series of scripts which made lists of credits (collected by a wonderful USENET group called “rec.arts.movies”) searchable. Though the naming was still four years off, the IMDb was, in essence, born. Suffice it to say, however, that since that time IMDb has become more than a list of searchable credits. On top of this bedrock of data we’ve recently added 6,000 full-length feature films and TV episodes which our users can watch for free. We have launched NewsDesk, (which allows news partners to add their news feeds to our site), individual pages for characters, plot synopses, FAQs, parental guides, and many, many more features. We now enjoy the patronage of over 57 million movie and TV lovers each month.

sidebar: i wouldn't have a way to do my job if it weren't for happy b-day you guys.

this isn't a post about my obsession with palin as president.

nor is it a post about how badly the dodgers sucked tonight.

nothing about the debate.

it's not to complain about leanne winning project runway. (boring collection missy)

it's about movies and/or tv!

the hammer museum had an exhibit that ended yesterday about one of my favorite architects John Lautner.

tickets to tour the above Sheats/Goldstein house sold out weeks ago much to my disappointment.

as we arrived at the museum there were signs on the doors that read "limited tickets available for the Sheats/Goldstein house tour." my heart lept. i was going to Jackie Treehorn's house.

sadly, my mother the extreme photographer nor i had a camera. the above photos were taken with my blackberry.

no words can describe how awesome the experience of being there was.

i am excited for season 3 to start tonight.

also, i can't find the video online but Sarah was on The View yesterday and she was kind of adorable.

Australia looks pretty

The Playlist has this set to screen video about Mandy Walker, the DP on Baz Luhrmann's upcoming Australia.
I agree with them, just based on the trailer alone this woman needs an Oscar nomination.
