happy new year

winslet praise

i just saw this on hollywood-elsewhere:

In his review of the movie, New York Magazine's David Edelstein throws some much deserved praise at Luminous Kate Winslet, and the rest of Team Revolutionary Road.
"Unlike many child actors who've made the successful transition to grown-up roles, DiCaprio hasn't evolved in predictable ways -- there are no clear lines of demarcation. His boys were unusually centered, his adults unusually boyish. His wide face still carries some insulating baby-fat, like Elvis Presley's and Bill Clinton's (before the latest weight loss), and Mendes uses that insulation against him, sometimes cruelly: What was self-assured and spring-heeled in Titanic now looks dodgy.

"Mendes and Winslet push DiCaprio to places he has never been. At the height of her fury, April flays Frank, and both the character and the actor have nowhere to hide. DiCaprio loses his sure balance, his control, and has never been more vulnerable or electrifying: Winslet has forced him into the moment.
"Well, she could force anyone into the moment. In Revolutionary Road, her emotions are too big for her face; she's such an elastic actress, so in tune with her characters' feelings, that her features seem to expand or contract in every scene. Her movements are wary, overly tight, like a woman no longer at home in her body; and when she releases that tension and moves in on DiCaprio, it's as if she's finally able to breathe.

"There is a cost to that freedom: April demolishes the marriage to survive, yet she might not be equipped to survive its demolition. There isn't a banal moment in Winslet's performance -- not a gesture, not a word. Is Winslet now the best English-speaking film actress of her generation? I think so."

read the rest of his review here.

In other RR news:

My step-dad gave me this article from the Wall Street Journal to read last weekend called "Why Hollywood Hates Suburbia" blah nonsense by Lee Siegel.

I think he thought I might agree with it?

I didn't.

Kim Voynar wrote a perfect rebuttle "Taking a Wrong Turn on Revolutionay Road".

There both interesting reads if you care.

But spoiler alert if you haven't seen the movie.

united states of tara

if you have to be awake early on new year's eve you can be like me and watch the pilot episode of United States of Tara.

(the Showtime website has it up, just enter the password "tara")

clearly the fact that i love diablo cody and toni collette has a large influence. i went into it knowing that i would pretty much like whatever i saw.
close-minded openness is what i call that attitude.

Couples Retreat

wait what?
My Vincey was in my city?

Just a week after the Arcadia Recreation and Community Services Dept. created a winter wonderland at the Community Center with 40 tons of snow, Hollywood came to Arcadia and went a couple steps further, turning the Community Center into a faux ice rink in a fictional Chicago suburb of Buffalo Grove, Ill., for a new movie called "Couples Retreat" starring Vince Vaughn, Kristin Davis, Jason Bateman, and Jon Favreau.
Vaughn and others spent most of Monday, Dec. 22, filming at the Community Center and later across the street at Santa Anita Park. Filmmakers converted the Top of the Stretch on the west end of the Santa Anita grandstands into a Chicago hotel room where Vaughn had a scene with one of the actresses.

here's a link to a super cheesy community bulletin-type video showing Arcadia turning into snowy Chicago.

no Doubt

100% perfection.

Kate Winslet

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE THIS WOMAN AN OSCAR.

that was me yelling.
i watched Revolutionary Road today.
she needs to win.
I watched Doubt last night. It was awesome, and Meryl Streep owned it...but really Kate needs this award.
I'm watching The Reader tomorrow, and I'm sure she'll be the shit in that one too.

one more on board

'Arrested Development' movie: Will Arnett is ready to go

As an Arrested Development movie inches closer to reality and the producers try to corral all of the old cast, one thing you can count on: Will Arnett is ready to reunite. "Arrested Development has such a special place in my heart,” he tells EW.com, “and I can't wait to strap that fake hand back on and fight the seal once and for all—wait, which guy did I play?" (For the uninitiated, that’d be highly incompetent illusionist GOB.) Fans have been clamoring for another round of Bluth family dysfunction ever since the critically lauded show was cancelled in 2006 (and the finale slyly hinted that the story could continue on the big screen). ”It’ll be fun to get back together with everybody and work on it,” says Arnett. “It’s been so long now, we almost have to do it. It’s like we have to finish the joke.” What details can he spill about the project? “I’m sure I’m not speaking out of turn when I say Christmas Day ’09, 12:01 a.m. is the first show,” he shares. “We’re opening on—this is unprecedented—13,000 screens. This is going to be mind-blowing. We start shooting this summer. It’s going to be directed by Obama’s Secretary of the Treasury, I’m not sure how [series creator] Mitch Hurwitz feels about that. Part of the Wall Street bailout is for our budget. We’re getting a bill and a half; because we were a business considered under duress because of the cancellation, blah blah blah, we met federal requirements. And the box office is guaranteed by the FDIC.” Sounds like money in the bank.

Time to musk up

"It's Made With Bits of Real Panther, So You Know It's Good."
The illegal-in-nine-countries Sex Panther by Odeon.

Deemed "quite pungent" and "formidable," the scent was said to "sting the nostrils ... in a good way" and even to smell "like pure gasoline."

This might sound unappealing, but "they've done studies, you know: 60 percent of the time it works, every time."

Finally finally finally! Paramount is now ACTUALLY producing this cologne, and you can buy it here, on sex-panther.com, for a mere $29.99.

30 bucks may seem like a lot for a novelty item, but how else are you going to smell like a turd covered in burnt hair?

you said it, trent.

i love listening to this song while driving at an unreasonably fast speed.

fun fact: trent reznor sat in front of me in the dome at the arclight for dawn of the dead in 2004 and i found him extremely attractive.

Land of the Lost

i love everything about this poster.

it's making me want to watch Elf, Pushing Daisies, Hot Rod and Jurassic Park. All at the same time.

no it's not. where's the snow?

germany in the 70s

a few of my friends and i play this game called "Totally Your Husband" (or TYH for shortsies).

it's been going on for years and years. it can happen in person, thru email or over the phone as some of us live hundreds of miles away from each other now.

the idea is: just pick out a freak and TYH someone.
once i was driving and i saw a dude on a bike wearing leopard print bike shorts, pink knee socks, a white v-neck and a rastafarian hat with fake dreads. i immediately called colleen and TYH'd her. Done and done.

holly just sent this video with husbands (and wives) for everyone!

email subject line:
Apparently, all of our husbands formed a soccer-themed dance troupe‏

i have NO idea what is going on here, nor do i know what they are saying. it is magical nonetheless.
"They're kind of like sprockets but in soccer uniforms and less Metropolis-esque!" is what my friend Carrie said.

i just want to keep watching this until life makes sense.

aronofsky

SlashFilm has part 4 of their interview with Darren Aronofsky.
I can finally read it now since I just saw The Wrestler.
Everything they're saying is true. It's a pretty damn good movie.
(even though Mickey Rourke's face scares me a lot. in 1998 I saw him at a Garbage concert at the Palladium and he was dressed like a pimp. not like "yo, that dude is pimp." but like " whoa dude. that's a real life pimp.")

LOL

(i really hate when people seriously type LOL, but that's all i could come up with, because i really did just laugh out loud. it's late. give me a break.)

random

~ Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian has a teaser trailer.
Don't laugh, but I thought the first one was kind of fun, you know for kids.
And you can't argue with this cast. Bill Hader is awesome here, and as always I heart Jonah Hill.

~ TV Guide has an interview with my tv crush Tim Kang. ( I am aware that literally no one on Earth will care about this but me and I don't care.) Sometimes I will go out of my way to go to a Shell gas station so I can watch the commercials that he does for them. (Cukoo for Coco puffs!) I need to watch The Mentalist.

~ I bought tickets to this:

just make it happen already

Though Michael Cera has voiced skepticism about the Arrested Development movie, at least there are still some more original cast members willing to board the stair car.
The latest is Tony Hale, who played Buster. Delicious! Here's what he had to say to
Paste (not as delicious) about the subject:

"Pretty much, we’re all willing to do it," he says. "I think it’s a matter of everybody’s schedule just being crazy. After the show, everybody did their own thing. We all had babies. So it’s just tough to pull everybody’s schedule together. And it’s also a matter of the budget and what they can do it for. I’d love for it to happen because I’d love to get together with everybody and just play and have a great time. There are a lot of other factors involved, but it seems like everybody’s excited about it."

That leaves Will Arnett, Portia DeRossi and Alia Shawkat left to confirm, and gives Cera a month to revise his opinion before he begins his
Sundance press tour. Careful there, Superbad... we have a feeling that if you stick to your guns, there may be a one-armed man waiting in Park City to teach you a lesson.

(i just copied all of that from Defamer)

Sidebar: this week alone I've seen Michael Cera and GF Charlyne Yi at the Mustard Seed Cafe and Masa Cafe.

Sidebar 2: working on a resume is the shittiest thing ever and i hate myself

it's time

i'm not sure if i can rock this necklace, but that won't stop me from trying.

real men of genius

dear reader,
i know the bud light real men of genius ad campaign is like almost 10 years old. i don't care. listening to them still brings me great joy.

i am on a mission to listen to all of them.

here's the list if you are a master in the art of time suckage like myself.

without having heard every single one (yet) i remember a few of my favorites being:

Mr. Boneless Buffalo Wing Inventor
(this one especially makes you appreciate the background vocals. "Hands of my drummies!" or "Hope I'm not eating rear end!" are 2 of the best lines)

Mr. After Halloween Costume Shop Salesman
"Something smells like cabbage!" and "Super duper tutu!"

Mr. Pro Sports Heckler Guy

Man

Today I saw Yes Man and I really liked it.
Don't laugh at me. If you like Jim Carrey you should like it too. And if you like the Bigfoot Lodge in Los Feliz you will see a lot of it in this movie. The director loves it there (me too) so they built a replica on the Warner Brothers lot.
That's just a fun fact from the press notes, something that is way incredibly obvious if you've been there because they made it HUGE and way more boothy.

Rhys Darby (Murray from Flight of the Conchords) is hilarious as usual...
Zooey Deschanel is the best she's been, I think.
She and Jim (haha. that sounds like her band name) have really great chemistry here. For realsies. Plus, if she gets any more adorable I'll just get mad.
But the best performance here seriously is Terence Stamp. Dude was the perfect scientology-like cult leadery freakaziod.

And speaking of the word "man"...
the full trailer for I Love You, Man is here.

P.S.
this was my 1,000th blog post.
wow. I don't know if that is horrible or crazy or neat or embarassing. it's one of those for sure.

Remember how I last week I said I was going to Largo for the Funny or Die Super Secret Awesome Show?
>
Remember when yesterday at work we got a press release announcing the show WILL FERRELL: YOU'RE WELCOME AMERICA. A FINAL NIGHT WITH GEORGE W BUSH? (which will be a broadway show and an HBO special)
>
Remember when last night the show at Largo was Will Ferrell performing the show for the first time in front of an audience?
>
Remember the video J*zz in my pants?
>
Largo holds 280 people you guys. We were in the 7th row.
>
My first clue was when I was picking up my tickets from will-call and the man in front of me gave his name to get his ticket.
Besides he's Will's dad, the man was one of the original members of the Righteous Brothers for Lord's sakes.
>
As I took my seat I saw Sandra Oh and Ed Helms (among other famous mcfamersons)
>
I'm not going to break down the entire show to spare you my bad writing....but needless to say it was once in a lifetime incredible and my face hurt from laughing for 90 minutes straight.
I should also mention that it really is a one-man show....with the exception of the hilarious Seth Morris as a secret service dude, who got some huge laughs as well...
>
Good times indeed.

'Office' Exclusive: Jack Black invades Dunder Mifflin

The Office's post-Super Bowl episode just scored the equivalent of a touchdown with a two-point conversion: Jack Black has signed on to guest star in the hour-long episode, sources confirm to me exclusively. The hitcom's producers are keeping the specifics of Black's stint under lock and key, so the only detail I've been able to uncover is that the funny man won't be playing himself. As previously reported by TV Week, the Feb. 1 episode, which will air immediately following NBC's Super Bowl telecast, will revolve around the staff of Dunder Mifflin roasting Michael (Steve Carell).
Maybe Black will serve as roastmaster? Or is he Dwight's long lost brother?

from EW

i almost forgot...

seriously.
how bad did Kanye West suck on SNL?
seriously.
his speak n' spell voice fucker upper was broken...he is an ass.....all sorts of things contributed to the suckiness.

i did like the movie screen background situation, but that wasn't enough to fix the sounds i was hearing.

if you're going to keep being the most arrogant motherfucker alive you better be able to back it up dude.

word.

i know i've posted that before, but i've never meant it more than i do this week.

we made the news!

The LA Times has a really awesome article about how my life got ruined this week.

ReelzChannel drops 'Dailies' show

More than 40 workers are laid off as the network responds to a slump in advertising.

ReelzChannel, the cable and Web network launched two years ago to feed the seemingly insatiable appetite of movie aficionados, this week canceled its signature show, "Dailies," and laid off more than 40 people who worked in its Los Angeles studios.
The "Dailies" program provided a recap of the day's movie news and previews of upcoming films. The cancellation was not a retrenchment of the channel's ambitions but a recognition of the souring advertising market, said Gary Thorne, president of ReelzChannel.

The operation, owned by Hubbard Media Group of St. Paul, Minn., continues to employ about 175 people, including 125 who work at the sprawling Los Angeles Center Studios on the western edge of downtown. "We took this occasion to look at everything that we are doing to find efficiencies and make some adjustments," Thorne said. "We don't have a crystal ball, but as we look going into 2009, it doesn't look too good."

Instead of focusing so much energy into producing a show every weekday, Thorne said, Reelz hopes to improve its programming by providing movie news in shorter segments that run throughout the day.
The channel is available in 43 million homes, up from 28 million when it launched in 2006. This year it added digital cable subscribers of Time Warner Cable and Charter Communications in Los Angeles.
As part of its strategy to get traction for the channel, Hubbard Media provided the programming free of charge to the cable companies.
The channel and website have relied on advertising revenue to cover costs, which makes them vulnerable in a recession."The advertising market is basically blowing up right now, and they are one of the few cable channels that have no license fees to support it," said Derek Baine, cable analyst with SNL Kagan. "For a network to be 100% reliant on advertising could be a disaster in this market," he said.

Still, Thorne said that ReelzChannel's roster includes more than 50 national advertisers, including Wal-Mart and Toys R Us. "Our business is growing and proving itself even in this tough economy," he said.

you guys. this looks like just a woobie.

but it's not your average woobie....

It's a motherflippin' USB Heating Blanket.

Ever experience that feeling freezing and slowing down your reaction when you are working in an air-conditioned room or in winter? Then USB Heating Blanket must suit your need. It has a warming pad inside. Once you plug it in the USB port, it will be warming your body. You can also just place it on your legs to keep your legs warm. Do a great job de-frosting your body and great for those who live in cold places.

you can buy it here.

don't make fun. i know i don't live in a cold place. but i get cold. i have footie pajamas. i have a space heater under my desk. i sleep with a heating pad whom i've named Charlie. this thing is perfect for me. especially because just this morning before my shower i was frooooozen so i looked at the digital thermometer and it said 71. Ha! 71. I'm such a Sally!

blah

i'm already tired of hearing about the golden globes. it hurts my heart that being laid off has made me care less about movies already.

i hate 2008 and can't wait for it to be over.
it sucked left and right. between mom's cancer, a dead dog, a dead cat, a dead fish, losing people you thought were your friends (3!), IRS drama, getting laid off and sitting through the movie Blindness I deserve a fucking winning lottery ticket.

Bitter? You better believe it.

As I try to recall things that were good this year all I can come up with right now are Radiohead at the Hollywood Bowl, Q-Tip at the HOB, some good movies, my new car and finally getting a laptop.
What a vapid ass I am!

on a happier note: some dear friends (Peter & Lauren! Sarah & Shad! Roxanne & George!) had lovely babies and Jerry and Catherine are welcoming a baby soon! so at least there's that stuff.

The Lonely Island

I missed this awesome article about Andy, Akiva, Jorma and their new CD yesterday because I was too busy getting laid off.

'Jizz In My Pants' crew Lonely Island taps Norah Jones, T-Pain for CD

There's much more to come from the guys who brought "J--- in My Pants" to last weekend's Saturday Night Live. That raunchy jam is in fact the first single off of a full-length release from comedy troupe The Lonely Island, made up of SNL ham Andy Samberg and SNL writers Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer.

Taccone tells EW that the childhood pals' debut, Incredibad (due Feb. 10 on Universal Republic), will include about 14 all-new tracks that they recorded while living together in Encino, Calif. this summer. Among them are collaborations with musicians like T-Pain, Jack Black, Bay Area rapper E-40, Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas, and smooth crooner Norah Jones. "It's almost too star-studded," Taccone laughs, adding, "it might be surprising what Norah's singing about. For both her and Julian, it's definitely not their regular content." Though the Lonely Island guys produced much of the album themselves, underground hip-hoppers DJ Nu-Mark and J-Zone also contributed beats.

The songs the Lonely Island created for popular SNL Digital Shorts, including
"D--- in a Box" (featuring Justin Timberlake), "Lazy Sunday," "A Day in the Life of Natalie Portman," "Ras Trent," and "Space Olympics," are also slated to appear on Incredibad. "It'll be the first time people get to hear everything without the audience laughter over it," says Taccone. "We spend so much time getting stuff to sound good, and then it gets on the show, and we're glad that it sounds good in the [live studio] audience, but nobody has ever really heard a clean version of those songs."

Live shows supporting Incredibad are not out of the question, though the crew will have to find a way to juggle any promotion with their already time-consuming work on SNL. "This [CD] is something we've wanted to do forever," says Taccone, who also has a supporting role in next summer's
Land of the Lost movie. "I would love for us to be able to tour, too. I just can't imagine when the hell we'd ever have time!"

I may have to watch Awesometown today.

light bright

i know that i have a problem with hyperbole.

but no joke, this is my favorite thing ever.

downtown LA. on 4th street. between spring and main. there is a magical light display that is just the prettiest thing i have ever seen.

lauren and i stood in the middle of the street to take it all in.

and my pictures do it no justice.

best 'For Your Consideration' ad ever.

Fallonier

I just have to agree a million percent with Best Week Ever's Michelle Collins on the Jimmy Fallon-replacing Conan situation.

Just read her version, because I suck. I also love her idea about who could replace Jay instead of Jimmy. Also, I may have a girl crush on her.

Jimmy's video blog isn't bad, and there's a cameo from The Roots....but it just makes me mildly uncomfortable to know that he'll be on a stage that was once occupied by Johnny Carson.

Spring Breakdown

what gives man?

i've been excited about this for what seems like 3 years and now it's going right to DVD?

and now everything makes sense.
watch the trailer and you'll see why. holy shit this looks awful. not even 3 of my favorite ladies can save this from looking like hot garbage.

and can we please talk about Sophie Monk? why is she attractive to men? you guys, eew. i saw her at comic con from 5 feet away and i was legitametly scared. she is freaky looking.
dear boys brains'~ just because a skinny-ass blonde is naked a lot doesn't mean she is hot. it means she is desperate for attention because her family didn't give her love.
abre los ojos.

this makes no sense

I just saw this article saying that Amsterdam is going to get a Times Square-like cleaning wherein the sexy time brothels and fun times coffee shops are going to be shut down.

I've never been to Amsterdam (sadly), but isn't that kind of like Disneyland saying that they are going to stop selling candy? Or Mickey souvenirs?

Tourism might go down you guys.

genius

So I was at the Century City mall last night. Usually finding parking there takes forever and when it's all over I have an attitude not unlike Daniel Plainview.

I guess it's been awhile since I've been there, but in my absence the parking structure Gods grew a brain and installed the greatest system in the history of parking.

Look at this picture dude.

See those little red lights above? Every spot has one. It's green if it's open, so you know if you should or shouldn't turn down an aisle.

So now instead of wanting to murder people with bowling pins, you just want to shop happy and go to the fanciest damn food court in the whole world!
Parking woes be gone!
Happy times for everyone!
Except maybe in a couple weeks when it's closer to Christmas.
But even then, the entire parking area is lit up like Christmas, so everyone kind of wins in that department.

Andrew Clark front and center!

Remember when I just had lunch with Emilio Estevez?
Ok, not really.
We were both eating lunch at Flix Cafe. He was on my turf at LA Center Studios. It was hard not to ask him to come upstairs and sign my BC poster.

Ed. note: he is here directing an episode of Numb3rs.

Tonight/Tomorrow
1-2AM
Comedy Central

Zach Galifianakis Live
Galifianakis starts his comedy special by apologizing for being hungover (''Last night I got so drunk I African-Americaned out''). The shambolic stand-up does seem to be fighting his way through an alcohol-induced fog, but he pulls off plenty of terrific non sequiturs, like ''Have you seen this show on Lifetime about that woman?''

prop 8 the musical

See more Jack Black videos at Funny or Die

i don't get it

why do adorable dudes always date her?

i love it

sometimes i just need to watch this to remember

PTA almost married Rachel?

whoa dude.

Super Genius Paul Thomas Anderson was offered the part of the groom in Rachel Getting Married. He did a table read and everything:

From Cigarettes and Red Vines:

in a semi-recent article with jonathan demme about “rachel getting married,” he mentioned the previous involvement of paul in the project.

Your movies have been progressive on the matter of race, often quite matter-of-factly. Here you have a mixed-race couple getting married and no one mentions it. Is this a deliberate gesture of post-racialism?

Jenny didn’t write it like that. In fact, Paul Thomas Anderson was offered the part of Sidney, and the second choice was Tunde. So that dimension might easily not have been there had Paul remotely been interested in playing a part in a movie. He came to a table reading, and he was fantastic, just adorable. But Paul passed on the part — he had something to do with a little movie he did called “There Will Be Blood” — and I met with just the best actors that the casting directors could find, and Tunde had the qualities that turned me on the most.

really?

seriously someone turned bubble wrap into a calendar.

i have a really deep love/hate for this fucking thing.
perpetual kid dot com has 100 other things i'd rather buy...

Radiohead remixed

twinkle twinkle little planets

i was fortunate enough to see this early last night.

This trio of planets were seen from around the world last night. And hopefully you saw it too because it won't be happening until 2052 (though, on New Year's Eve, Venus and the moon will be in view). This conjunction of planets have been seen in our skies since Thanksgiving night, but last night was when they appeared closest together.
